This unit is charged with coordination of training activities throughout the Law Enforcement Division, maintaining a cadre of instructors, reviewing all Law Enforcement Division training requests, the coordination of specialized or advanced training programs, administration of the Field Training and Evaluation Program, maintaining training records of all Law Enforcement members, coordinating all in-service training programs, the evaluation and recommendation of training programs, compiling training information for distribution, providing training supplies and materials, maintain a close working relationship with and acting as a liaison to the various criminal justice training providers on matters of training. Instructors are assigned to this unit on an as needed basis form the various units within the Law Enforcement Division of the department. While various In-Service training programs are conducted at department sites, members of the Albany County Sheriff’s Department, attend most courses at the Zone 5 Regional Law Enforcement Training Center. Sheriff James L.Campbell has supported this institution and been a member of its Board of Directors since its inception.
All members of the Law Enforcement Division are required to successfully complete a Basic Course for Police Officers that meets or exceeds the requirements established by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council. During this training Recruit Deputies are assigned to the Training Unit. Following graduation Deputies are assigned a the Field Training and Evaluation Program. This program is designed to provide the probationary deputy with an environment to transfer the training received during the Basic Course for Police Officers to the practical needs of a Deputy Sheriff on patrol.Members promoted to first line supervisory positions complete a 3 week Course In Police Supervision which meets Municipal Police Training Council course requirements. Law Enforcement members attend annual in-service training on topics such as firearms, legal updates, and; the use of force/deadly force. Members involved in specialized operations receive training in various topics such as Firearms Instructor, K-9 Handler, SCUBA Team Member, Hostage Negotiator, Snowmobile/ Marine Patrol Unit Member, Fire Investigator, Armorer, Police Instructor, Accident Investigator, Photographer/ Evidence Technician, Narcotics Investigator, Emergency Medical Technician/ Paramedic, New York State Sheriffs Association course on Civil Procedures.
