Deputy Sheriff
The Albany County Sheriff's Department complies with all of the requirements and standards established for eligibility for employment as set forth by the New York State Civil Service Law. Notice of scheduled civil service entry level exams are published by the Albany County Civil Service Commission and copies of these announcements are posted at various locations throughout Albany County and on the Albany County web page. Such notices include the date, time and location of the examination, a description of duties associated with the position, requirements for qualification, instructions on how to apply and notice that the Albany County Sheriff's Department is an equal opportunity employer. A certified list of eligible candidates is compiled by the Albany County Civil Service Commission at www.albanycounty.com and forwarded to the Sheriff’s Department for processing.

The selection process consist of the following steps
(a) passing a Civil Service examination
(b) a canvass of eligible candidates to determine interest in the available position(s),
(c) notification to eligible candidates to complete an employment application,
(d) be scheduled and successfully pass a physical agility test, a psychological examination and a medical examination,
(e) complete a background questionnaire and successfully pass a background investigation, and
(f) successfully complete an interview process.

Note:

The physical standards and physical fitness standards are prescribed by the Municipal Police Training Council. Upon appointment as a member of the Albany County Sheriff's Department, members will take an oath of office and will serve a probationary period of one (1) year from the date of appointment. During this period of probation the member is required to successfully complete the Basic Course for Police Officers. Following graduation Deputies are assigned a the Field Training and Evaluation Program. This program is designed to provide the probationary deputy with an environment to transfer the training received during the Basic Course for Police Officers to the practical needs of a Deputy Sheriff on patrol. Probationary Deputies are periodically evaluated through the Field Training and Evaluation Program and performance evaluations.
