The Forensic Identification Unit is operated under the auspices of the Criminal Investigation Unit and is responsible for the processing and collection of evidence recovered at all major crime scenes. This specialty unit is comprised of highly trained law enforcement members who must be certified by the State of New York as “Advanced Evidence Technicians”. These technicians are required to be proficient in all aspects of photography, latent fingerprint examination and recovery, physical evidence collection and preservation, and overall crime scene management. FIU Investigators are routinely called upon to process crime scenes ranging from homicides and unattended deaths to residential burglaries and motor vehicle thefts.
